Did Jesus really go to hell?

Last week in our adult Sunday school class, we looked in-depth at 1 Pet. 2:19-20, which is one of the most difficult passages in the Bible to understand.  Some interpreters take this passage to mean that Jesus descended into hell after his death and before his resurrection to preach to spirits held in prison there.  These spirits are understood by some to be the souls of an ante-diluvian super-race and by others as the souls of the generation destroyed by the flood.  In any event, this interpretation would go hand in hand with the statement from the Apostles' Creed, "He descended into hell."  Is that what Peter is saying in this passage?  Here are the Sunday school notes from 6/12/2011.
