What Christians Can Do About Abortion

Jan 22nd was the 41st anniversary of the landmark Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court Decision which established the practice of abortion as a constitutional right in the United States. Since then, more than 55 million unborn babies have been killed in America. By comparison, 6 million Jews were murdered by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis in Germany during the World War II era. It’s no wonder that many people are now calling abortion the new holocaust. What can Christians do about abortion? Here are three things that every Christian should consider doing:

  1. Speak up. Christians are called to speak God’s truth in our fallen world. “Open your mouth for the speechless, in the cause of all who are appointed to die" (Proverbs 31:8); “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15); “The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). Who else besides Christians are going to tell our godless society that every human being has been created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26-27) and that it’s wrong to murder (Exodus 20:13)? Think of the impact it would make if every Christian in America would share their pro-life convictions with friends and relatives, write letters to the editors of local newspapers, post pro-life statements on websites and Facebook, give pro-life presentations at schools and civic organizations, and teach their children that abortion is wrong (Deut. 6:7).
  2. Set a pro-life example. Show others by your good deeds and Christ-like attitude that you believe in the sanctity of human life (Matt. 5:16; 1 Pet. 3:15). Love your neighbor as yourself by seeking to help people (Luke 10:27-37). Share the gospel, which is the message of eternal life (John 3:16; 10:10; 20:31).
  3. Pray. Abortion is ultimately a heart issue and only God can change hearts. But God hears and answers the prayers of His people. “If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14); “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much” (James 5:16).
